The Monkey King 2 is a 2016 Chinese epic fantasy film directed by KIm Hsiang-liang and starring Andy Lau, Zhao Wei, Wang Baoqiang, and Xiao Zhan. It is the sequel to The Monkey King from 2012. The film was released digitally on November 25, 2016 by Tencent Pictures as part of the series' 15th anniversary celebration. In ancient China there lived a monkey king who ruled over humans with his magic powers because he made sure they never used them to harm each other. But one day, he was injured by the claws of a demon. He went missing for nine days before returning to his people with his powers gone. The humans started to use their magic for evil and the gods took notice. They changed the monkey king's name to "Sun Wukong" or "the Monkey King" and they condemned him to live on earth for 500 years, after which he could earn rest in heaven again. He then took on the form of a human and took on the name "Tian Wushuang". He became skilled in martial arts, but he never found peace. Thousands of years later, Wukong was still unable to return home. Wukong had an epiphany one day while listening to the rascally monkey Gui Gui's story about his journey to vanquish demons; he decided to use his abilities for good instead. After taming a group of monkeys, Chi Chi and Da Min Ye, who were part of a troop led by Little Master Monkey during their childhood years, Wukong agreed to teach them martial arts so they could help others instead of ruling over them as kings. Wukong also took Chi Chi and Da Min Ye to a crystal cave where they could train under a female martial arts master, named White Eyebrow, who had been imprisoned by demons. Far from humans, Wukong's group spent many years training and honing their skills on each other. In time, Little Master Monkey became the leader of Wukong's group and the others gained respect for him. One day Chi Chi and Da Min Ye were ambushed by demons, but made it out alive thanks to Wukong's quick thinking and Little Master Monkey's dog-like abilities. The two lead a troop of monkeys in chasing down the demons that harassed Wukong's troop. Wukong and Little Master Monkey separated and went in search of the demons. Wukong confronted the demon that had bitten him, but was unable to defeat him in that state. As Wukong flew away, the demon vowed revenge. Wu Kong ran into an old beggar woman (an incarnation of White Eyebrow) who revealed herself to be White Eyebrow when she turned into her true form after he gave her food.
